Our Web Site is Days Away

It only took us a few days to realize that, with well over 135 "legitimate" nonprofits in town, most the host of multiple fundraising events each year, a blog format was not going to work for long.

In just a few days, the link below will take you to our free website.

Thanks for your interest and support!

Local Donors. Local Volunteers. Local Charities. Local Events. Local Results.

We thank you for your support.

Center For Inquiry Talk, March 29

On Thursday March 29, 2007, CFI Naples Community will be holding a meeting at 6:30 pm at the Best Western Hotel at Pine Ridge and I-75 (Exit 107) Naples, Florida.

The topic will be "The worldwide impact of radical Islam - is there an answer?" with guest speaker Ibn Warraq, who is known worldwide as an outspoken critic of Islam.* There will be snacks and refreshments, and a $10 donation will be collected at the door.

261-6652 or email brtnaples@yahoo.com

*Please note: the Coine Foundation ("Ending Poverty Through Education"), which brings you Naples Social Action, in no way endorses or criticizes any religious beliefs or political affiliations. However, we support learning as an intrinsic good, and we endorse dialog based on informed opinions. This event promises to meet that test.

What is Naples Social Action?

Naples Social Action is a free resource for the entire Greater Naples community, established and maintained by the Coine Foundation. We saw a need and, because of our strong bias for action, we set out to fill it that same day (Sunday, February 18, 2007).

Naples Social Action is the venue for every single approved nonprofit in our area to list their upcoming events and post some details. Contact information is provided for volunteers and donors to learn more about the events that interest them.

Naples Social Action exists to match donors and volunteers with the good causes that best fit their needs in terms of interest, schedule, level of commitment, and level of financial giving.

This web log is a temporary measure: as mentioned, we didn't want to wait to get the word out until everything was perfect - there are too many good causes that need your help right away!

For the long haul, we have already begun construction of a web site that will allow members of registered nonprofits to post their events quickly and easily. Members of the community will be able to donate and/or volunteer online through the site, and also shop Amazon.com - a great "free" way to give while you shop.

No matter your interest, if it is happening in or near Naples, you can find it at Naples Social Action!

Ride for MS April 21-22

Riders - take action! There are two fundraising bike rides for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society on April 21 & 22: take your pick.

One goes from Ft. Lauderdale to the Keys and back; the other is from Tampa to Orlando and back (some Coine staffers and friends are doing this one). Each ride is about 150 miles. It's a lot of fun for a very good cause.

Granted, these rides take us beyond the borders of the Greater Naples area (our "local" chapter, South Florida, is in Ft. Lauderdale). However, this disease knows no borders. It attacks across all of our socio-economic, racial, age, and educational strata. Raising money in Naples will benefit everyone with MS, including those in Naples.

Coine Foundation - ongoing need

We are seeking volunteers to teach adult and child immigrants English as a Second Language (ESL) and/or literacy.

Snowbirds Welcome! Because farm workers migrate at the same time that snowbirds do, there is actually a much bigger need for services, including teaching ESL, during the cooler months. If you choose, you can take your experience back North with you and volunteer there during the summer.

If you can commit to giving two (2) hours per week, the Coine Foundation will (1) teach you the fastest and most effective methods of teaching ESL & literacy, (2) place you with the organization that best fits your needs as a volunteer, and (c) we will support you (non-monetarily) throughout your career as a volunteer teacher.

Experienced teachers are more than welcome, too.

Contact our chairman, Ted Coine: 239-331-2524 or ted.coine@coineinc.com.

Thank you in advance for your support!

Naples Resource

We're cheating a little bit here: Naples Resource isn't a charitable event. Still, it is a free service to the Greater Naples community.

When we at Coine find a business here in town - a doctor, a restaurant, a hardware store, etc. - that is worth talking about, we post a write-up on the Naples Resource blog. It is our way of thanking the business for doing such a great job. It is your way of finding companies you may want to patronize.

American Cancer Society Relays for Life

There are five fundraising events coming up in support of the American Cancer Society's fight against Cancer (dates below). Each lasts all night, with a closing ceremony at noontime the following day. You are encouraged to enter a team (10-15 participants recommended), but these events are open to the public at no charge.

If you've never been to a Relay for Life, you're in for a great time. Teams set up booths at the site, where they sell jewelry, T-shirts, food, raffle baskets, chances at the dunk tank (Mortgage too steep? "Dunk your banker!"), hold silent auctions.... There is music and other entertainment; it's a real festival atmosphere. And, of course, the event honors the survivors of cancer.

Some notes of interest:
1. Cancer rates are in decline for the first time in history.
2. The American Cancer Society has produced 40 Nobel Laureates - no other organization even comes close!
3. There are 4,400 Relays for Life in cities across the U.S.A. each year.
4. Naples ranks #11 of those 4,4o0.
5. The "Audubon Cares" team ranked #3 in the nation last year, raising over $120,000.
6. The Pulte-DiVosta Homes" team ranked just behind them, at #6, raising over $95,000.
7. You'll be glad you went.

Friday 6 PM - Saturday at noon each weekend listed:

www.acsevents.org/relay/fl/bonita - March 2-3

Naples Winter Wine Festival 2008

Wow! The 2007 event, held Jan. 26-28, raised $18.3 million for various children's causes here in Naples. That's a new record for the Wine Festival, and it's also one of the largest fundraising events on earth.

March 2oth* there will be an invitation-only awards ceremony held for the organizations chosen to benefit from this largess, held at the Ritz-Carlton.

Next year's event will be held January 25-27 - yes, ending on Ted Coine's birthday. Tickets aren't cheap, so start budgeting!

*Date subject to change. Please confirm before making plans.
