Kennedy in Defense of "Liberal"

Funny, I've never thought of myself as a liberal, and I've never been a big fan of JFK's. But today a friend shared this quote, which somehow I'd never read before. Enjoy!

"If by a 'Liberal' they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a 'Liberal,' then I'm proud to say I'm a 'Liberal.' - John F. Kennedy

Well, I am both a liberal and a fan of JFK, but have never seen this quote either. I find it a very accurate and rational definition, unlike the perversions of the term and concept that have been so successfully disseminated in the last two decades. Thank you for sharing this! (My company is a supporter of the Laptop program, which led me to check out your blog.) Best wishes.

Wow!

You actually sent me to your site and I am honored!
Today I am writing a letter to the editor and the JFK quote is exactly what I needed for the letter.
I will write and introduce myself a bit later today.

Thanks so much, Dianne Rhodes
